Germany Gains Victory Over Argentina

July 27, 2018 by

The first of two matches in the Pool C division, which took place at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre, saw Germany and Argentina fight for a place at the Women’s Hockey World Cup. Germany’s team was not new to the scene by any measure, having won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Argentina was on equal ground, being bronze medallists themselves.

Despite this, Germany managed to gain their first goal just six minutes into the game, which was scored by Hannah Gablac. Nine minutes later, Florencia Habif of Argentina equalized the game with her own goal at the penalty corner.

The equal score did not stand for long as Germany’s Charlotte Stapenhorst scored another point for her team in an open play. She scored once again five minutes later, which Germany held on to until half time, where Argentina grabbed the last goal of the game.

From the end of half time onward, neither team was able to add any more points to their respective scores, and Germany held on to the lead until the end of the match.

The win marks the second time so far in the Women’s Hockey World Cup that Germany has ended a game with a six point total by the end of the game, which is no small feat in itself. The team may hold on to the bragging rights for the moment, but there are still eight more teams set to play in upcoming games.
