Washington Capitals Defeat Golden Knights

June 11, 2018 by

For the first time in 44 years, and much to the delight of both the team and the legion of fans, the Capitals have won the Stanley Cup, beating Golden Knights in event’s finals.

The Golden Knights did manage to rebound after their loss in Game 4, and began their fight with the Capitals with nothing more to lose. Gerard Gallant, head coach for the Knights, decided to pair Shea Theodore and Nate Schmidt, while removing Ryan Carpenter and Ryan Reaves at the same time. In their place he added David Perron and William Carrier – which many believe was a smart call, as Perron and Schmidt scored their first goals in the series.

By the time that the second period of the game had come to an end in Game 5, Reilly Smith’s power play with under a minute left on the clock had pushed the Knights to the top of the scoreboard, giving them their first lead. By the time the teams had entered the third period of Game 5, the Capitals were one point behind.

Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller were the stars of the game, who both managed to score during the last period of the game, pushing the final score to 4-3. The Washington Capitals managed to win the Stanley Cup in five games, and Alex Ovechkin, winner of the Conn Smythe Award, will become an important part of hockey history, along with Washington’s first Stanley win in almost 50 years.
