Michael Cheika Under Pressure

August 27, 2018 by

The All Blacks potentially winning the second Bledisloe Cup is being met with both anxiety and excitement. Their upcoming test against Australia could see the team extend their current hold on the title to an impressive 16 years, while Wallabies coach Michael Cheika could see his tenure come to an abrupt end.

There have been calls for Cheika to resign as coach of the Wallabies, especially after the team lost 38-13 in their first Test against the All Blacks in Sydney.

By half-time, the Wallabies were leading 6-5, but eventually lost out on 33 points during the second half of the game, with the All Blacks fighting back hard to take the first Bledisloe Cup. The loss meant added pressure to Cheika, and even had some fans demanding that the coach refund their tickets.

The outcry against the Australian coach could only be abated with a win at Bledisloe II, but there isn’t much hope for the team, as the Aussie side has not won a Test at Eden Park since 1986, and the All Blacks are currently unbeaten at the Auckland Stadium, which covers 41 Tests since as far back as 1991.

Their latest clash against the All Blacks had Cheika ordering his team to try and tackle their opponents into submission, and while it worked for the first 35 minutes, full-back Ben Smith managed to slip between tackles and along with wing Waisake Nahoto, turned the game around for the New Zealand team.
